UNDERSTAND YOUR QUOTE
Your residual value.
Your payoff quote.
Two different questions.
Your residual helps describe the scheduled end of your lease. A current purchase quote gives an amount for a dated transaction. Before calculating a buyout, make sure the number answers the question you are actually asking.
In this guide

Start with the document and its purpose.
Your lease agreement describes the purchase option, if one exists, and the basis for a scheduled-end purchase. A current quote is the amount offered for a particular purchase at a particular time. A dealer worksheet can describe additional transaction costs. These documents may show different totals without referring to identical obligations.
| Document | Useful for | Still needs checking |
|---|---|---|
| Lease agreement | Understanding the purchase option and scheduled-end price or method. | Whether a current purchase has a different amount. |
| Current official purchase quote | Identifying the starting amount for a purchase now. | Validity date, payee, and tax or fee inclusions. |
| Dealer worksheet | Seeing proposed transaction charges and services. | How those lines relate to the lessor’s quote. |
A purchase now is not a purchase at lease end.
Regulation M distinguishes purchase-option disclosures at the end of the lease from disclosures for a purchase during the term. It does not supply one universal early-buyout formula. The agreement and current purchase instructions are the relevant starting points for your account.
Do not assume the residual plus every unpaid monthly payment is always the purchase payoff. Do not assume every difference is an improper fee either. Ask the lessor to explain the quote’s components before assigning a reason to the difference.
A difference that needs an explanation.
HYPOTHETICAL EXAMPLE · Not a real payoff statement
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Contract residual | $20,000 |
| Four remaining payments of $400 | $1,600 |
| Simple addition | $21,600 |
| Current official purchase quote | $21,250 |
| Difference requiring clarification | $350 |
The two totals differ by $350. This example does not establish what that difference represents. It could not be labeled a specific adjustment, discount or error without the transaction’s supporting information.
The useful next question is: “Please explain how the $21,250 purchase quote relates to the scheduled-end amount and remaining obligations in my agreement.” Enter the official quote as the calculator’s base once you understand its scope, then classify any separate costs.
If you only have your contract.
You can create a scheduled lease-end planning estimate using the appropriate residual or purchase-option base and known separate charges. Mark it as an estimate and keep uncertain tax or fee amounts visible.
If you want to purchase early, request a current official quote instead. GM Financial and Toyota Financial publish routes for requesting purchase information; the GM guide and Toyota guide link those instructions.
Check the date before arranging payment.
A good-through date and a payment deadline are practical parts of a quote. Confirm when funds must arrive, which payment method is accepted, and whether any taxes or title fees are paid through a different party. Mailing a payment on the expiry date does not establish that it will arrive or clear in time.
If the quote expires, request an updated amount. A completed calculator result cannot extend a quote’s validity. We do not assume one standard number of validity days across lessors.
